Get-Winter-Ready Plumbing & Heating Checklist

Winter will be here before you know it. Is your home ready? Make sure that you check these three tasks off your list before the temperatures drop.

Hire a Plumber

Do a DIY Inspection

Before winter hits, it’s a good idea to do a thorough plumbing and heating inspection in your home so that you can deal with any leaks or other issues you find before they become a bigger issue. Do a full DIY inspection of your home plumbing and heating systems, looking for signs of damage. Check all exposed pipes, water heaters, boilers, faucets, showerheads, and outdoor spigots for rust, discolouration, cracks, leaks, and other damage.

Insulate Pipes

Protect any exposed pipes around your home with insulation. You can purchase affordable pipe insulation from your local hardware store. There are multiple options, including foam sleeves you slip over the pipes and insulating tape that you wrap around the pipes. Choose your preferred insulation and install it on any exposed pipes, especially those in unheated areas like garages.

Have Your Furnace Serviced

Don’t skip your annual furnace service! There is nothing worse than having your furnace break down in the middle of an Edmonton winter. Prevent that from happening by having your furnace professionally serviced every year in the fall, before temperatures drop too much. A furnace service appointment will include a full inspection of your furnace, cleaning, testing and adjusting components of the system as needed, and diagnosing any potential problems.
