Why Do I Keep Running Out of Hot Water?

Do you find yourself taking unexpected cold showers more often than you would like? It can be hard to tell what’s causing your hot water to run out, but these three issues are commonly the cause of a lack of hot water in the home.

Sediment Buildup in the Hot Water Tank

If this is the case, your water will come out in spurts of hot and cold. If you find yourself with hot water one minute and only cold the next, it’s quite likely that your problem is a buildup of sediment in your hot water tank. Have your tank flushed out to remove excess sediment. If there is so much sediment buildup that flushing out the tank does not get rid of it, it may be time to replace your hot water tank.

Broken Dip Tube

A dip tube is a component in a hot water tank that causes cold water to move to the bottom of the tank in order to be heated up. When a dip tube breaks, cold water in the tank rises to the top and mixes with the hot water, resulting in lukewarm water that won’t get hot. If your water is lukewarm but won’t get any warmer, a broken dip tube may be the problem.

Your Water Heater is too Small for Your Household

Is your household in a constant argument over who gets to shower first because the second or third shower is predictably cold? If your hot water always runs out after a certain amount of usage that leaves you unable to do important everyday activities, like showering or doing laundry, your hot water tank is probably just too small for your household. Hot water tanks come in different sizes for different households, and it is important to choose one that has the capacity for the number of people in your home and your hot water usage needs.
